TAROKO NATIONAL PARK
For more than half a century, travelers have been mesmerized by Taroko Gorge,
a 19km-long ecological wonder deep within Taroko National Park on Taiwan's scenic east coast.
The national park, which is more than three times the size of Taipei City,
is famed for its breathtaking mountains, rocky ravines, and the cerulean Liwu River.
Established in 1986, Taroko National Park is emblematic of Taiwan's late-20th-century environmental protection movement.
Half of the park's area is covered by mountains, many more than 3,000m high.
The Liwu River winds through deep valleys on its way from the source on Mount Qilai's north peak east to where it empties into the Pacific Ocean.
From sea level to the park's highest point, Mount Nanhu (3,742m),
visitors experience a changing microclimate as they pass through various ecological zones,
rom bucolic broad-leaved forest to mixed deciduous/coniferous woodland to windswept alpine grasslands.
Taroko Gorge's stunning white cliffs are composed of marble,
a mineral formed millions of years ago when immense tectonic forces heated and compressed limestone.
The gorge is continually evolving from erosion and uplifting at a rate of 5mm annually.
Earthquakes and typhoons have dramatically transformed the landscape within Taroko Gorge,
making the scenery ever changing and exciting, even to repeat visitors.
The park is home to 34 species of mammals including black bears, Formosan macaques (rock monkey),
nd wild boar; 144 species of birds; and diverse vegetation that includes fir, hemlock, spruce, pine, and hardwoods.
The magnitude of Taroko Gorge is best viewed during a scooter, car,
or bus ride along the Central Cross-Island Highway combined with planned stops for treks on foot.
Some treacherous trails require a permit to hike.
Highlights include the 1.37km-long Yanzikou Trail (Swallow Grotto) with its famous Indian Head Rock formation
and the 1.9km-long Jiuqudong (Tunnel of Nine Turns) that provides fantastic views of the river, limestone cliffs, and tunnels.
While many folks visit only for a day, it is possible to camp at several sites within the park.
If you come to visit Taroko National Park, Bear Forest Villa must be your best relax home, sweet home~
